Longboard decks for beginners
Admittedly: Longboarding usually looks easier than it is. If you decide on a board and buy it, this does not automatically mean that you are a born longboard pro and can master the board like no other. As always: practice, practice, practice - so that after a while you can finally cut a fine figure on your longboard. Here you can find our selection of longboard decks for beginners. ###
Longboard decks for beginners: getting started doesn't always have to be difficult
Once you've mastered the right technique, longboarding won't be difficult at all. Here are a few valuable tips for beginners.
The perfect beginner's deck
To avoid constant falls and accidents at the beginning, almost all leading brands have included special beginner longboards in their range. These are characterized by various features and offer you, among other things, a secure stance and maximum control over the board.
When choosing your perfect beginner deck, the following factors are important:
- Your desired riding style
- Your size
- Your weight
- Your experience (e.g. through skateboarding)
Many longboarders tend to take on too much at the beginning. This often means painful falls. It is essential that you don't know your limits and honestly assess your abilities before you get on a longboard. This is particularly important when deciding on a riding style.
Disciplines that are well suited to beginners are carving and cruising. Others, such as downhill, freeride or dancing, can be added once you have mastered the basic techniques on the longboard. This includes braking and steering as well as simply moving forward. Sounds obvious, but it needs to be learned first.
Test first, then invest (more)
Most longboards for beginners are quite inexpensive so that you don't overestimate the cost of your new hobby right from the start. However, this also means that you are not dealing with real professional decks. Once you have familiarized yourself with the material and know which riding style, flex and deck shape is right for you, you can always buy a higher-quality (and more expensive) model.
Step by step: The beginner's technique
The basic steps for getting around on a longboard look like this:
- Place your supporting leg on the longboard.
- Make sure that you don't suddenly slide off, but stand firmly.
- Use the other leg to push off the ground with force.
- Repeat this process until you have picked up enough speed.
- Place the push leg behind the standing leg on the deck
- Push off again if you start to slow down.
It is important that you are always relaxed and loose during the movement sequences. The phrase "stiff as a board" should only apply to your board - not to you. Avoid hectic movements and daring maneuvers, especially at the beginning of your longboarding career - it is much more important that you concentrate on coordinating your legs and ensuring a secure footing on the board. Everything else will come with experience.
By the way: The grip tape on the deck plays a big role for beginners. Always make sure that you can't suddenly slip or slide off.
A master rarely falls from the sky and even the absolute longboard pros once started small. With a solid beginner's deck, you can gradually approach your new hobby and find out which requirements are particularly important to you.
