The wind blows around your ears with downhill decks
With a professional Downhill longboard you can easily reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. The prerequisites for this are a track with a more or less steep gradient and a board that is perfectly adapted to the difficult downhill conditions. Not only the wheels and trucks, but also the deck of a downhill longboard must therefore meet many requirements so that you arrive safely at the bottom at the end of the ride.
A downhill deck impresses with the following features:
- A mostly narrow basic shape
- Cut-outs on the wheels to prevent wheelbites
- A low stance for perfect control of the board (= drop)
- A low flex to prevent the deck from "flapping" from approx. 50 km/h (= stiff)
Important: absolute control of the board
The most important thing is that your deck gives you confidence and that you don't suddenly lose control of your longboard while riding - because this can have fatal and painful consequences.
To avoid this, all downhill decks have a drop, i.e. a particularly low stance. You can imagine it as if the deck sinks in the middle when you look at it for a long time. This "trough" helps you to control the board better. You are closer to the ground, giving you more grip and security.
Another very important characteristic of downhill decks is that they are very stiff. In this context, experts speak of low flex(ibility). Longboards in the carving and cruising sector are often very flexible and therefore enable a particularly smooth riding style. This characteristic is very dangerous when riding downhill - and therefore absolutely undesirable.
To illustrate the problem a little: If the board had a high flex, it would start to wobble at around 50 km/h. As you can imagine, this can definitely become a problem if you have just started your descent and are planning to reach speeds above 80 km/h.
For this reason, we would like to take this opportunity to point this out once again: If you want to ride downhill, you absolutely need a special downhill deck. Any other choice could potentially be life-threatening for you.
