Longboard bushings: the small but subtle differences
The German term for bushings is " Lenkgummis". In principle, this name describes exactly what these small, colorful little helpers are all about. Bushings are used in the longboard sector to influence various factors of your board, such as steering behavior or agility.
This means that the rubbers that you attach underneath the kingpin screw ensure that your longboard suits you and your style even better. You can find many different bushings from different manufacturers in our longboard store. They differ from each other not only in terms of their colors. The following applies with regard to the hardness of the bushings:
- Hard bushings make the longboard rather sluggish, but very stable.
- Soft bushings make the longboard very flexible and maneuverable.
The hardness of the bushings is specified in durometers (as with the wheels). The value for the bushings is usually between 65 a and 95 a. The higher the number, the harder the bushings are.
There are essentially three different types of bushings:
- Barrel bushings: barrel or cylindrical bushings are used when you want to give your longboard stability and safety. For this reason, these rubbers are used particularly in the freeride and downhill sector.
- Cone bushings: These conical bushings ensure that your longboard has excellent steering characteristics. Carvers and slalom riders swear by these bushings.
- Chubby bushings: The situation is completely different with chubby bushings. These restrict the steering radius because they block the axles above a certain point. These rubbers are primarily used by downhillers.
Bushings have a major influence on the stability and steering behavior of your longboard. They are the ideal way to adjust your board perfectly to your needs. The right bushings can be the answer for longboarders who want to perfect their board down to the smallest detail and squeeze out the last few percent of performance.
