Fins are used to guide the board. The bigger the fins are, the better the board stays on track, but the slower it is. On the other hand, extremely flat boards and light wind boards run more over the fins than over the board itself. In this case, the fins actually provide more speed and assist in running upwind. Some kiters use  the extremely long race fins. Fins differ  not only in size, but also in their shape. Mostly the flat, wide fins are used, often G 10 fins, for wakeboards  even flatter or very strongly rounded models and waver prefer the longer curved fins. Predominantly you have only two, sometimes 3 or 4 fins on the tail.
